About this watch

DESCRIPTION & SIGNIFICANCE

Tudor launched its Submariner in 1954 with the reference 7922, a year after Rolex introduced its own. For the next fifteen years the two watches shared almost everything except the movement and the name on the dial. Tudor then began to go its own way, first in 1969 with the reference 7016 and its square "Snowflake" hands, and then in the mid 1980s with the reference 76100.

Introduced in 1984 to replace the "Snowflake" Ref. 9411/0, the Ref. 76100 was a short-lived transitional model produced for only a brief period (roughly 1984 to 1988). It bridged the gap before Tudor transitioned fully to the Ref. 79090.

The 76100 is a transitional Submariner, and its nickname comes from the hour hand: a single round lume plot on a slim stem, shaped like a lollipop. The reference sits between the Snowflake era and the last generation of Tudor Submariners, and it was made for only a few years, so far fewer of them come up than Snowflakes.

This example dates to circa 1984. It has a 40mm stainless steel case, a black dial with the Lollipop hour hand and an acrylic crystal, and it is supplied on a 9315 Oyster bracelet.

CONDITION & COMPONENTS

Originality: All original Tudor parts that are appropriate for the reference and year. Bracelet clasp code matches 1984 era.

Key Wear Notes: Honest wear from a 40+ year old vintage dive watch. Refer to photos for condition.

MOVEMENT & PERFORMANCE

Caliber: ETA 2824-2 base (modified by Tudor)

Service History: Unserviced, sold as is.

Functionality: Watch winds and runs. Date wheel changes at 24 hours. Quickset date functions appropriately and keeps good time.

DIAL & HANDS

Variant & Condition: Black dial. Meters first, T Swiss T.

Lume & Aging: Rare "lollipop" hour hand. Unlike the standard Rolex/Tudor "Mercedes" hand, the Lollipop hour hand features a completely open, uninterrupted circular dot of luminescent material. It was Tudor's experimental attempt to maximize the luminescent surface area for underwater legibility without using the blocky Snowflake style. This style was eventually discontinued by Tudor as the lume was more prone to cracking than others.

UV Reaction: Hour, minute and second hand lume illuminates briefly under UV light. Dial does not react at all under UV light.
Given the unknown service history, it is safe to assume the hands are later-era service replacements -or- expertly re-lumed original frames featuring modern photoluminescent material (likely early Luminova), contrasting the watch's untouched, inert 1984 tritium dial.

Hand Set: Lollipop hour hand with a single round lume plot.
